Been thinking about teaching averages from grouped data tables this week and one of the issues with certain groups, is that the students stumble over finding the midpoints of each group and then get themselves in a tizz about getting the wrong answer. They then go onto to get frustrated about the actual new learning and we end up in a downward spiral.
So ,,,, the next time I teach the topic I’m going to use the attached worksheet (print 2 to a page to save paper) as a starter – its along the same lines as my usual “follow me” worksheets. It will then spell out add them and divide by two, which hopefully will give them the necessary strategy to find the midpoints of each group. We’ll see if this helps … fingers crossed!
