So here is my “Hit List” of revision topics > HIGHER HIT LIST for paper 2 …. Remember we use the 1MA01 series from Edexcel so this list doesn’t apply to any other board! And as always you are entitled to your opinion … but this is what we’re going with.
Overall the first paper was good for us (we think!) and yes there were some bizarre “pseudo-context” questions and it got trending on Twitter but is that no surprise given that almost 3/4 of all students use this exam board … but… the whole twitter bandwagon thing was quite humorous. There was a pythag question that on first glance wasn’t obvious but once you labelled the picture it was quite evident what was needed (I like that question!!), and the same could be said for the cheese question that has got people talking – according to some of our students ‘the sums fell out easily’.
Anyway we told some of our students that today will do one of two things (1) give you a kick up the bum to do more revision because it DIDN’T go as well as it should or (2) give you a kick up the bum because it DID go really well and you think you are in with a chance of getting the next grade up, which is why we produce a ‘target list’ and a best guess paper – It’s a way of focussing our student’s revision and in no way meant as a guarantee. Some students when faced with a massive list of revision topics get over-awed (and as a result we’ve found that instead of making a start some students will do nothing as the mountain they have to climb seems insurmountable) and so we provide them with a finite list to give them a starting point. We’re also going to email it out to parents along with answers so they can check the work too!
HERE ARE OUR BEST GUESS PAPERS:
Higher Tier ->
Best Guess Paper 2 – Edexcel Linear HIGHER – JUNE 2015
Foundation Tier ->
Best Guess Paper 2 – Edexcel Linear FOUNDATION – JUNE 2015
I have some worked solutions for the Higher tier courtesy of the amazing Emma Bell (@El-Timbre) but its late and I need sleep … so I’ll get them up tomorrow night now!
Note: I have excluded questions for two way tables and probability trees from the Higher but we will be doing a quick couple of questions with the students on Saturday morning (revision) just in case. I have also excluded vectors as I don’t think you can do it justice with one question.
HEALTH WARNING: I’ve put these together based on our best guess of the broader topics and if nothing else, they’ll give you an opportunity to practice some maths before the exam on Monday. I have tried to make sure there are no mistakes but its just little ‘ol me and I make mistakes … I’m not infallible (hard to believe I know!)
Heres a DROPBOX LINK to solutions provided by Emma Bell (@El_Timbre) and Tom Bennison (@DrBennison) … follow them both … NOW!
