So it’s “new school year” eve and I can’t flipping sleep … this is now my … ummm … oh I don’t know … genuinely I can’t recall how many of these I’ve done but it doesn’t get any easier for me. Every year is the same so you would have thought that I’d know that it will all be ok … I have a frame of reference that tells me its all ok … but still!
I’ve had the same feeling as a trainee teacher, a returning to the same school teacher and also as a new teacher at a new school and it always turns out ok … in some guises it was tougher than others.
Moving schools is tough … so to those of you that will be walking into a new school this week I really do salute you. I’ve moved schools 4 times and I don’t plan on doing it again. Each time I wondered, at some point if I’d made a mistake … so to you when it’s tough … remember: its not you; its not the kids; its not the school. It really is just the situation .. give it time and I promise it will get easier.
This will be my 4th year in my “new” school … I really must stop calling it my “new” school … the kids ask me if I know “so-and-so” and are flabbergasted when I tell them I know hardly anyone outside the maths department. Of course I know them to say hello to but it’s been a mental time (in and out of work!) and I’m slowly coming to accept that I’m an introvert at heart. Contrary to all outward appearances!
If I’m being honest, I’m really looking forward to getting back into a routine. It’s just so weird how during term time, I can seem to hold it together and be able to accomplish 27 000 different things in a day and manage to have some form of social life (not much of one!) but then during the Summer holidays I feel like I’ve conquered Everest if I achieve one big task a day … now imagine how chuffed I am with having done 8 (yes 8!) tip runs this break.
On that note … try to enjoy day one … have fun (don’t worry I won’t grass you up for playing buzzword bingo!). My money is on hearing “how many weeks until half term” from a colleague by lunchtime at the latest.
