STICKY! 9-1 Exam questions by topic – HIGHER TIER – version 2

The below are all the HIGHER TIER questions collated by topic from:

  • AQA – Sample Assessment Material and Practice set 1 and 2 
  • OCR – Sample Assessment Material and Practice set 1
  • Pearson Edexcel – Sample Assessment Material, Specimen set 1 and Specimen set 2.
  • WJEC Eduqas – Sample Assessment Material

Please note that these questions have been copied/retyped from the original sample/specimen assessment materials and whilst every effort has been made to ensure there are no errors, any that do appear are mine and not the exam boards (similarly any errors I have corrected from the originals are also my corrections and not theirs!).

The objective is to provide support to fellow teachers and to give you a flavour of how different topics “could” be examined. They should not be used to form a decision as to which board to use (as if they would .. but it needs to be said!). There is no guarantee that a topic will or won’t appear in the “live” papers from a specific exam board or that examination of a topic will be as shown in these questions.

  5. OHMYDAYS I had my mock exams today and the questions were so hard. ( I am doing the new GCSE) and many of the questions that popped up are on this website! If only I found this website two days ago because I’m sure I failed them.

  9. Hi Mel

    Is there a “Trigonometry 1” missing from the Higher page? There are two different versions of “Trigonometry 2” on this page which seems to be more the harder trig stuff (sine rule, cosine rule etc) but no “Trigonometry 1” with more basic stuff. Thanks for all your hard work on this, totally amazing resource which I am linking in to my SOW as we speak!

  13. On the Algebraic Proof Question 4 your answers prove it using consecutive terms. The exam question wants it proved for ANY two terms and the actual mark scheme proves it in a more general form.

  18. Happy New Year Mel and the team, hope you are well.- Just wanted to confirm a solution with you for exact trig ratios.
    Question 1 wants the answer in the form ‘root k’, where k is an integer. Whilst we are used to always simplifying surds where possible, in this case are they wanting the single surd, which would be root 48?

    Possibly not, but the wording seems that way.

  19. IF UR READING THIS AND IS A MATHS GENIUS(OR DECENT AT MATHS) REPLY ASAP!!!! ALGEBRA-EQUATION OF A CIRCLE QUESTION 3, THEY DID B*H DIVIDED BY 2 T GET THE AREA. BUT ITS NOT A RIGHT ANGLED TRIANGLE SO HOW CAN YOU DO THAT, DO U NOT DO 1/2(AB*SIN C) OR SATIN LIKE DAT

    • If there isn’t any questions on those topics it’s because the exam boards hadn’t put any in the papers that are listed on the blog I’m afraid. It doesn’t mean they aren’t going to come up though.

    • if there are any questions it will be on the circle worksheets – I’ve collated what questions were on the sample/specimens. Thats not to say they won’t appear if there arent any questions on a specific topic.

    • kinematics is not in the new GCSE. Proof of circle theorems in not new.

  22. when you guys collect the questions from the exam paper do u use the mark scheme answers or do it urself, cos ive found quite a few mistakes 🙁 bounds Q10 the lower bound should be 7.15 not 7.05

  23. Don’t know how you keep your composure with some of these crazy comments.

    Anyway, a minor correction on the Trigonometry solutions V2, the first answer needs a slight addendum. The answer requires the full height (which has been underlined, so kudos for that) but then the 1.8m hasn’t been added on to the trig result.

  25. Thanks for this. A wonderful resource. I thought I should let you know that your answer to 17b of the Congruence and Similarity worksheet is incorrect, and the actual answer should be ‘Between 1 and 2’.

  30. On volumes of prisms (cones, pyramids and spheres), question 5, I don’t think you should subtract the volume of the frustum from the volume of the overall cone? Especially seeing as you only need the volume of the frustum to multiply by 2.5? Please reply asap, thanks

    • The volume of the frustum is being calculated by subtracting the small cone from the large cone THEN once you have the volume of the frustum it be x 2.5

  31. An excellent resource, thanks.
    Just a quick note though on the proportion and reasons higher level the question about rice cakes the answer is incorrect, the value 3.29 has only been multiplied by 7.22 not 7.22222222222( it’s a recurring decimal) this makes quite a big difference to the answer which should be 29.761 calories per rice cake

  37. Hello, on the Bidmas, powers and roots answers it says (2x)^2= 4x and so is not always greater than 2x. Surely it should be 4x^2? Which means that (2x)^2 is always greater than 2x?

  38. Hi Mel,
    On the Expand, simplify and expand worksheet the answer for the last question you wrote down is incorrect. Put down the answer as 5x/2 but when you square a fraction you square the top and bottom, therefore 5-root-x/2 is 5 squared = 25, times by root-x squared which is x so the top is 25x BUT for the bottom you put the answer over 10 but it should be 5x/2 because as I said you square both sides of a fraction e.g. if you type into a calculator 1/2 squared you get 1/4 because 1^2 is 1 and 2^2 is 4 therefore the overall answer is 5x/2

    • It really depends on the worksheets – some are longer than others . Best way to approach it is to set a certain amount of time and work to the time rather than a specific amount of work . Hope that helps. Mel

    If anyone wants the answers to ‘Geometry – H – Trigonometry v2’ (right-angled trigonometry) here are my solutions:
    1) Height of tree = 29.97m
    2) a) cos(50) = 0.64
    b) x = 2.6cm
    3) Angle x = 20.9°
    4) Angle x = 80.9°
    5) Distance AD = 48.2m
    6) Angle BCA = 66.9°
    7) Length x = 6cm
    8) a) Angle x = 43.3°
    b) Length y = 31cm
    9) Length BD = 0.664m (to 3 sf)
    10) Length CB = 33.8cm
    11) a) tan(x) = ¾
    b) Length y = 4.5cm
